How to spot a reprint or fake vintage tee
By Javier · False Vintage
A reprint is a new shirt carrying an old design. Nothing wrong with that, as long as it's sold as one. False vintage is when a reprint, or a new shirt distressed to look old, is sold as the original. These are the checks that usually catch it.
1. The tag doesn't match the date
The most common giveaway. A graphic dated 1985 on a blank whose tag design, maker or RN number belongs to a much later period is a later print. Tagless printed labels inside the collar on a supposedly 80s shirt are a strong warning sign.
2. The print is too perfect
Old screen prints usually show their age: fine cracking, slight fading that follows how the shirt was worn and washed, ink that has sunk into the fabric. Many modern reproductions are printed digitally (direct-to-garment), which can look flat, slightly fuzzy at the edges under close inspection, and sit on top of the fibres. Very crisp, glossy or perfectly even prints on an "old" shirt deserve a second look.
3. The wear doesn't make sense
Real wear is uneven. Collars stretch, shoulders fade from sun, armpits and hems wear first. Factory distressing tends to be even and symmetrical: uniform fading over the whole shirt, holes in neat places, a "vintage wash" that looks the same front and back.
4. The fabric is wrong for the era
Heavy, stiff 100% cotton with a modern tag on a shirt sold as a thin 70s tee, or a modern tri-blend sold as an 80s original. The fabric should agree with the decade the seller claims.
5. The listing avoids the evidence
No tag photo, a cropped collar, no close-up of the hem, "vintage style" buried in small print, or an era claim with nothing to back it up. If the seller won't show you the tag, ask why.
Reissues aren't the enemy
Officially licensed reissues are legitimate products, and plenty of people prefer a fresh shirt with a design they love. The problem is only ever the label: a reissue sold as an original at an original's price. Every reissue on this site is described as a reissue with the year it was made, when that can be told.
